The Power of Support: How Small Acts Lead to Big Impact

Have you ever had one of those moments where everything around you feels like a whirlwind, but you suddenly realize it’s the small, everyday things that truly matter?

I’ve got a story from my high school days that I still think about every now and then. It’s a little silly, a little surprising, and definitely a lesson I carry with me into my work today.

It was my senior year of high school, and the first week of Homecoming was in full swing. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly excited. I mean, Homecoming was cool for some, but I’d never been the type to get all caught up in the “popular” events. I wasn’t the star athlete, I wasn’t the girl everyone was talking about in the hallways—I was just… me. But what I was excited about was seeing which of my friends would make the Top 15 court. I’ve always loved seeing the people I care about do well, and I couldn’t wait to cheer them on.

Then came the moment that would change my whole perspective.

They started announcing the names of the people who made the Homecoming court. One by one, they called names, and suddenly, I heard "Kelly Boyer." At first, I thought it was a mistake. I mean, they definitely didn’t mean me. But then they called my name again. What?!

I immediately tried to disappear behind my friend Mike. I mean, there was no way I was going up there. I wasn’t one of the “cool kids,” and everyone knew who I was already. Why would they want me up there?

Mike, being the good friend he is, turned to me and told me to go. “Come on, Kelly, go up there,” he urged.

I clung to him and said, “Hell no, Mike! I’m not the popular girl!”

But Mike wouldn’t have it. He gently reminded me that the reason they called my name wasn’t because of my popularity. It was because I took the time to see everyone. I wasn’t just cheering for the popular kids or the ones everyone expected. I cheered for the underdog, I celebrated the small victories, and I made sure no one felt invisible.

Mike said, “Kelly, they see you because you make a point to support them every day. You cheer for everyone, no matter who they are. You’ve always made sure that the person who feels alone knows they’re not. This is everyone’s way of telling you that they see you for the difference you make.”

That hit me like a ton of bricks. I wasn’t “popular,” but I was noticed. People appreciated the small things I did every day—supporting them, encouraging them, and just being there.

With Mike’s support (and a little bit of a push), I walked up to that stage, still a little nervous but feeling supported and empowered. What happened next still sticks with me: after the ceremony, people I’d never expected—those I thought didn’t even know I existed—came up to tell me they voted for me. And honestly, I was shocked.

But what I realized that day is that it wasn’t about winning or losing—it was about how I made people feel. The difference I made wasn’t in the title I held, but in the small, everyday acts of encouragement I offered.

Now, fast forward to today, and I’ve built my business around that exact same concept. When you work with me, it’s not just about me telling you what to do. Now, let me take you back to that Homecoming moment: I ended up making it to the Top 5, but I didn’t win Homecoming Queen. And honestly? It didn’t matter one bit. I was a winner every single day, because I got to show up as my true self and share that with everyone who invited me to do so.

So, remember this: It’s not the big, flashy moments that define your success—it’s the small, daily actions of encouragement, support, and kindness that make you a winner in the hearts of those around you.

You don’t need a crown to make a difference. You just need to be you.
