From Soccer Field to Business Success: Life Lessons That Changed Everything
I want to take you on a journey back to my teenage years, to a time when soccer wasn’t just a game—it was my life. I ate, slept, and breathed it. I played goalkeeper for a team called White Magic, and let me tell you, we were something special. Every player on that field brought something unique to the table. We were like the cogs of a wheel, each of us contributing our individual talents to create something bigger than ourselves.
I loved that team with everything I had. We weren’t just teammates; we were a family. I quickly learned some powerful lessons that still impact how I live my life and run my business today, and I want to share those lessons with you.
Lesson 1: You Can't Do It All Alone
In soccer, the goalkeeper has a big job, but I couldn’t win the game on my own. My teammates had their own unique strengths, and together we made the perfect team. In business, this is just as true. No matter how hard you try, you can’t do it all alone. You need the right people around you to help take your business to the next level.
In those crucial moments on the field, I knew that even if I was the last line of defense, it was the support of my teammates that got me there in the first place. The same applies to business. Surrounding yourself with the right team can help you reach new heights—whether it’s in your professional team or a network of mentors and partners. No one makes it to the top alone, and if you're trying to do it all yourself, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
Lesson 2: Surround Yourself with the Right People
That last season with White Magic was hard for me. It was my final chance to play goalkeeper for a team I loved. I was too small to be a goalkeeper for the older teams, and the new team I was joining already had an excellent goalkeeper. But my time with my team wasn’t over yet.
We found ourselves in the finals of a tournament, and the last whistle blew after double overtime—score still tied, 0-0. It was all on me now. We were heading into a shootout. I stood in front of that giant goal, facing five incredible players. Fear gripped me, and the what-ifs stormed through my mind: What if I fail? What if I lose it for my team? What if I miss my shot at this one last moment?
The first player came up, shot… and I saved it. The crowd went wild! One by one, I stopped every shot, but the game was still tied. It came down to the final 2 shooters—me and number 7.
I stepped up to the ball, nerves running through me, and I shot. Goal! The crowd erupted. We were up 1-0, but now it was their turn. Stopping the last shot was all on me. If I missed and they scored, we’d have to go again. Holy crap! The fear was real (and I might pee my pants)!
And then—I stopped it. The ball flew toward the upper left corner, and somehow, I soared higher than I’d ever jumped before. I blocked the shot. O-M-G! We won! My teammates and I went crazy. We were champions.
In that moment, I realized: Fear can either hold you back or drive you forward. No matter how scary it gets, you can’t let fear stop you from going after what you want. Whether you win or lose, what matters is that you keep going, you don’t quit.
This is the energy I bring to my business, and it’s what I want to bring to yours.
